Although experimental studies clearly indicate that psychomotor performance declines considerably with ingestion of alcohol, ED studies more accurately reveal real world conditions. These studies allow us to better determine whether people are equally likely to use alcohol in a variety of activities and to what degree alcohol ingestion increases likelihood of injury for these activities. As well, there may be other personal factors than decrements of psychomotor capabilities that may act to increase the likelihood of certain types of injuries.

Column 3 shows the number of respondents that thought the injury would have occurred regardless of their drinking (anc) and column 4 represents those who were not sure. Column 6 shows the subjective AF produced from averaging two ways of estimating the “not sure” responses; one in which all of these respondents attributed their injury to drinking and, conversely, none of the respondents attribute their injury to drinking. The subjective AF shown in column 6 can then be compared to the objective AF as shown in column 5 (corresponding to the equation above), estimated using the standard definition of relative risk.

1- 1 RR , where RR (relative risk) is an estimate of the risk of injury due to drinking relative to the risk of non-injury due to drinking. In comparison, given a split of the injury patients into those attributing a causal association of alcohol and injury and those not making such attribution, an estimate of the “subjective” attribution fraction (AFs) of injury due a c to the use of alcohol within six hours prior to the event is (AFs = — a + c )(see Table 4). The main advan- tage of direct subjective assessments here is readily apparent: a sample from a control population is not required.
