Good heavens, had any baseball coach ever possessed so many offensive play gems with which to trick the opponent? Not even those 18911898 teams had all these weapons to use, those collected by Dan O'Rourke and Stu Southworth in the years 1897 and 1956. But there were still more good plays hidden away, waiting to be unearthed by those enterprising experimenters.

This became the suicide squeeze bunt to score two runs. It was practiced and honed to perfection. Before long, the coaches' teams had two types of squeeze plays. Both coaches had toyed with the percentages of success when they called the steal-on-pitcher plays. They rehearsed their teams diligently in executing these plays, beating the catcher's throw down to that next base. This could be used for any runner, at any time, at first, second, or third base. " And so was born in their minds a new creation with a new titlethe safe squeeze bunt.

Coaches Dan O'Rourke and Stu Southworth completed their lifetime repertoire of offensive baseball plays by inventing the various types of these delayed steals. In each of these plays timings are varied; no two are alike at all. Refer to Chapter 2 of this text for complete descriptions of these delayed steal types. Both coaches, very late in their careers, completed the last play with the delayed steal while the bases are loaded. It is the weirdest play ever devised for baseball, but these coaches found that it always worked, never failed to score a run.
