Its use in local anaesthesia can be attributed to intense cooling, resulting from rapid evaporation. Ethanol is generally present as an impurity in ether. It should always be kept in airtight containers in cold dark places. Formerly, ether was not used in fixing mixtures because chloroform, which is less toxic and easier to handle, could be used for the same function. It has been used in a few fixing mixtures, like Newcomer's fluid (1952), to clear the cytoplasm and the cell of the fatty and oily substances, so that the other components can reach the substrate easily.
