If it occurs too early, your eyes will tire and may lose focus or even blink as the pitch is en route. If it happens too late, you won’t pick up the ball in time and it will be past you and in the catcher’s glove before you can even get the bat off your shoulder. Picking Up the Pitcher’s Release Point In order for your eyes to quickly move to the pitcher’s release point, determine the location of her release point. Most pitchers’ release point will be right off their throwing side hip, but some will vary vertically.
You may experience trouble getting to the ball in time, especially when facing a pitcher who throws hard. Wrapping your bat is also a common mistake. Wrapping means the angle of your bat cocks too far behind your head when you move to the launch position. If the bat were the hand of a clock, it would point to 12:00 when held straight up and down. The correct position (when viewed from behind the hitter) is for the bat to point to 11:00, maybe even 10:30. If it points to 10:00 or 9:30, you’re wrapping your hands.
You have problems sighting the ball. Poor balance causes you to move your head too much—either up or side-to-side—and you cannot focus and track the pitched ball. You are late in reacting. Pitches always seem to arrive too quickly. When you try to move athletically—such as reacting to a pitched ball—you must move from a nonathletic position to an athletic position, likely an inefficient one. This takes time and in batting you don’t have time; you must be ready to strike the ball with a swift, economic movement.
