Example text

This is composed of the user, the trouble, the current relationships and general position in which the user is placed. The help-compactthat is provided to meet the needs of the situation may be a single method of help or several methods integrated into a whole. It may be brief, short-term or long-term, the latter being continuous or periodic, that is, requiring help at intervals only. The help-compact has various stages. Initial and early stages include assessment, planning and decision-making; middle stages cover implementation of the plan; final stages include review and ending, with or without follow-up and option to return.

Help-compact and helping-task I have used trouble as a comprehensive term to cover physical, emotional, mental, personal and social - needs, problems, difficulties, disorders, disability, disadvantage and maladjustment. The presenting trouble is the one for which the user seeks help. There may be an underlying trouble which is causally connected with it and which could receive attention, should the faceworker identify it and the user wish to focus on it. In addition there may be concurrent troubles, which were not presented initially but which might be found to need help.

Often there is ignorance of their very existence. Failure to use an agency when its help could be useful is a common collaborative failing. Narrow uision Often help is not offered because the viewpoint of the initial helper is too narrow to take in the user’s situation as a whole, and too restricted to a single profession or agency to encompass an overview of the help available. Such narrow vision may come from ignorance, lack of ability, defensiveness or a helping approach inadequate to the situation.
