P01, Jan. 82. From the purely economic standpoint power plants would be sited, wherever possible, on the shore of the sea or other large bodies of water. Yet in California, it seems likely that few, if any, atomic power plants will be built on the coast or on the shores of large lakes, because the public has decided that scenic and recreational values of shores are greater, and that even a moderate stress impact produced by the operation of power plants is unacceptable. In such a case we have to look at the im­ pact of cooling ponds and cooling towers and higher costs these entail.

On the whole more fuel calories are used in the total process than are harvested in food calories. The fuel cost of feedlot beef is 10 times the energy value of the beef. Such a situation can occur only if fuel energy is very cheap and if we are not concerned with environmental degradation by argicultural poisons and wastes.
