Modern constructions of this interrupter have a metal shield surrounding the arcing contacts. The diameters of the contacts and their stems are matched with those of the arc chamber and insulators. The moving contacts are made movable by the use of metallic bellows. The arc chamber is welded to the housing flanges, which, in turn, are brazed to metallised ceramic insulators, thus giving a hermetically sealed interrupter. The vacuum pressure is generally 10–6 bar. The material of the contacts plays a very important role in the overall performance of the vacuum circuit breaker (VCB), and, in fact, the entire development of vacuum technology is centred around the use of proper material and geometry of the contact.

Dikshit This chapter covers various technological aspects related to circuit breakers. The arc phenomenon which is common to all circuit breakers, has been discussed in the chapter, covering the arc phenomenon in gases and vacuum media. Circuit breaker technologies, which are based on the medium of arc interruption have also been covered.

The noble gases do not form negative ions by attachment of electrons nor do pure nitrogen and hydrogen. Obviously, an electric field would speed up the electrons so as to render attachment improbable. High temperatures also reduce the probability of attachment so that in a high-pressure arc column, few negative ions are likely to form an attachment. 67 ¥ 10 –9 4 ¥ 10 –9 4 ¥ 10 –9 Mean time of electron attachment neutral particles, they emit energy, which is equal in amount to the original ionisation energy of the particles.
