[Cont. ] 18 THE NATURE OF GASES AND OF HEAT The outcome was that Waterston's paper was read to the Royal Society in March 1846, and an abstract was printed in the Proceedings of the Royal Society, but the paper itself remained in the Society's archives and was generally unknown until 1892, when Lord Rayleigh discovered it and had it printed in the Philosophical Transactions. In an introductory note to the paper, Rayleigh discussed its history and concluded that such " highly speculative investigations, especially by an unknown author, are best brought before the world through some other channel than a scientific society " and that a young scientist should first establish his reputation " by work whose scope is limited, and whose value is easily judged, before embarking on higher flights".
