Modem readers and critics have been given to dismissing these books as a waste of effort or worse, but in their own age and later a multitude of people were soberly grateful for Arnold's endeavor to "guard the fire within" from being smothered by what now seemed impossible beliefs. In the next few years Arnold's lectures and essays were devoted mainly to politics and literature. Two collections were Mixed Essays ( 1879) and Irish Essays and Others ( 1882). Among the more important things of this period were Equality ( 1878), Ecce, C onvertimur ad Gentes ( 1879), an address which also stressed social reform, and The Future of Liberalism ( 188o); The Study of Poetry and essays on Gray and Keats, Wordsworth and Byron (written for anthologies), which, with pieces on Milton, Shelley, Amiel, and Tolstoy, were collected in the second series of Essays in Criticism, published posthumously in 1888.
