E. , at A n. To be sure, at A  Kant says that “All intuitions are nothing for us […] if they cannot be taken up into (aufgenommen ins; my emphasis) consciousness,” which is connected in the context with the establishment of properly categorial transcendental unity. ” This suggests the independent presence of consciousness – just as the fact that unattended-to portions of a perceptual field can get “taken up” to various degrees is reasonably regarded as presupposing at least an indeterminate, or less determinate, consciousness of the field within which the attention is eventually directed.

He says that it has to be a “pure object” (reinen Gegenstand, A 157/B 196 [my emphasis]). What is represented by the “transcendental system” notion comes closer to filling that bill than what is represented by the “transcendental self” notion. In any case, I am now going to connect this notion of transcendental unity to the demand that our power of thought affect actual intuitings, in such a way as to justify saying that thought is, in a robust manner, thereby actually operative within those intuitings.
